Just checking in with a question

Is there anyone other than Gary Matthews Jr., his agent, Bill Stoneman, and fans of other AL West teams who think this deal is good for the Angels? I mean, has any Angels fan anywhere come close to saying that this deal isn't awful?

I think Bill Stoneman may be retarded. Seriously.

I think this matthews jr. is the type of sparkplug we've been missing since 2002. Give the signing a chance. 50 million for 5 years may turn out to be a bargain in the end.

It will turn out to be a bargain only if someone like Figgins goes on the market and gets $70MM for five years. It only becomes a bargain if other GMs show the absolute stupidity that Stoneman has shown here, but amplified.

Give the signing a chance

We don't really have a choice, do we? It's either that or root for someone else. Don't think that hasn't crossed my mind.

You sound like a fair weather fan. You moved to chicago. Why don't you just become a cubs fan. Stick it out and good things will happen.

Yeah, I'm a fair weather fan. That's why I own like 10 Angels jerseys, and shell out $150 for the baseball package every year, and go to every game the Angels play in Chicago. You've got me pegged. I haven't been a fan since I was fucking born. Pardon me for being pissed when the team makes stupid moves.

Figgy for Crede, in some iteration, would at least take one half-step toward Stoneman regaining some semblance of, like, sanity, But not much.

I don't see Crede improving the team much. So he hit 30 home runs in Chicago, that's 25 in Anaheim. And he doesn't walk.

But Crede can catch the ball, which is a lot more than the rest of the Angels could do last year.

Why can't fans be pissed about a bad signing? It doesn't mean that you are fair-weathered.

I just dont think it;s a bad signing. Matthews has just enetered his prime. We will get his best years.

Seitz said...

Very few players enter their prime at 32. Most players are exiting their prime at that time. The research is out there. Prime years tend to be 27-30.

Just what do you got against the sarge jr? The private will be kicking ass in center for us the next 5 years. Matthews Jr. arguably one of top 5 signings of offseason.

What are you, his mom?

What do I have against him? Nothing personally, as we've never met, but a career filled with mediocrity, walking papers from three teams, and a numbers spike that just happened to coincide with a fluky BABIP way out of whack with the rest of his career doesn't fill me with confidence. Let me guess, you were probably convinced that Brady Anderson was a lock to hit 50 again after his 32 year old season, right? Hell, he at least had turned in some good seasons before that year. Matthews had two average seasons and a bunch of below average seasons heading into this year, and those average seasons came in less than full playing time. This is easily the worst free agent signing in team history.

was the signing worse than me. i really sucked on the angels.

Seitz said...

Actually, Mo, you didn't really suck on the Angels. In two healthy seasons, you hit 69 homers, drove in 225 runs, hit roughly .275, and slugged around .500. I'd be surprised if Matthews hits 69 homers in his five years with the Angels.

You were a dick after you left, but when you with actually playing, you were pretty good, and one of those years, you played on a messed up ankle all year.

But more importantly, you were younger, and had a clear track record of success. In your four prior years, you averaged close to forty homers, 120 RBIs, and had an OPS of roughly .985 or so. Garbage Matthews Jr. has nothing close to that track record of success. So this signing is exponentially worse than the Mo Vaughn signing.
